about

We learned this from North Carolina fiddler Marcus Martin's repertoire, referencing the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Several versions have lyrics talking about Booth being a traitor and deserving the noose but the melody is so cheery it's easy to imagine the original author somewhat happy about the circumstances, perhaps hailing from a Confederate state. In any case, its an example of how cultures, even divided ones at war, use the music to commemorate their ideals, events and identity, a darn swingin' tune too.
