As kickin' tune indeed, hangman's reel's true origins are rather obscure. Found in a few repertory's of Virginia fiddler's who cite the tune as English, but others maintain it is an American take on a quebecoise tune named "reel du pendu" or hanged-man's reel. Curiouly, grammar is important to recognize as those two vary in subject, one quebecoise tune for the hanged and one american tune for the hanger.
