An actual historical figure, railroad Bill was a black American circus preformer and turpentine worker turned outlaw active around the Alabama, Georgia and Florida borders around the end of the 20th century. Specializing in train robbery, fitting his name, he also garnered a local lore as a shape shifter, as he would continually evade scores of search party's and lawmen successfully. Eventually, though, he was caught but the song carries his legend onward.
